Elections to go ahead

25 Mar, 2004 05:39 PM
Walgett shire will go to the polls this Saturday after local government minister Tony Kelly promised there would be no further election delays.

Mr Kelly confirmed he would not delay any elections after proposed changes to the Local Government Act failed to pass in time.

Mr Kelly introduced the Local Government (Council and Employee Security Bill) to Parliament last week.

If passed this would have replaced the Local Government Act 1993, and given the minister the power to delay the elections of councils under a public inquiry.

Mr Kelly said the Opposition and some members of the cross bench had not stated their positions on the Bill, and so could not be certain whether it would pass through the Upper House.

"I would have liked to delay local government elections, especially at Walgett which is the subject of a public inquiry under Section 740 of the Local Government Act," he said.

"I do not believe it is in the public interest to proceed with elections where the council is the subject of such an inquiry."

The Bill is expected to be debated in Parliament next week.

Walgett shire mayor Peter Waterford said he was pleased the elections would go ahead.

"I'm of the opinion that the minister is not going to kick a new council out. I may be wrong but I have a feeling that he won't."

He said he hoped the new council would work together to help the shire progress into the future.

"I just hope this council, and there seems to be a lot of young people standing, can work together and run the council as a whole, and if it does that then the minister will have no reason to fire it."

The election will be held on Saturday from 8am to 6pm.

The polling booths are Lightning Ridge Central School, Walgett High School multi purpose centre, Burren Junction, Carinda and Collarenebri public halls, Cumborah Tennis Club House and Rowena Public School.
