Efforts to strike up Blue Light

Efforts to strike up Blue Light

23 Sep, 2004 11:20 AM
Lightning Ridge police and community members are re-establishing a well-known initiative to try and get kids off the streets and into a safe environment.

Blue Light is an international community policing initiative set up to provide drug and alcohol free entertainment, social and sporting events for children and young people under the age of 18 years.

It does this by providing young people with positive lifestyle alternatives and strategies to avoid becoming an offender or victim of crime.

Blue Light previously ran in Lightning Ridge but folded about seven years ago because of lack of support from both police and the community.

Constable Mark Johnson is the president of the newly formed Blue Light Committee, which he hopes will provide safe entertainment for children as well as a place to socialise.

"The one thing lacking in this town is something for the kids," he said.

"My aim is to get Blue Light running again."

Blue Light no longer just runs discos, although this is the easy and popular choice in many communities.

Under the Blue Light banner the committee can organise camping trips, pool parties, skateboard competitions and other things that may interest the children of Lightning Ridge.

"It's not just a dance but it teaches children how to socialise properly," Constable Johnson said.

The committee cannot run Blue Light by itself and so is looking for people in the community willing to help out, either on the committee or at the functions as supervisors or helpers.

It is also looking for sponsorship of events from businesses around town so the committee can provide a good service for the kids.

At the moment the committee is looking at running an event once a month, with the first function expected to be in October.
