 Drought tour takes in Walgett

Drought tour takes in Walgett

16 Jan, 2003 08:38 AM
Five National Party members met with council in Walgett on Tuesday to release their drought policy.

Shadow agriculture minister Ian Armstrong, members for Barwon, Coffs Harbour and Lismore Ian Slack-Smith, Andrew Fraser and Thomas George respectively, and NSW National Party leader George Souris' chief of staff Bryce Osmond were touring the north west to see the worst drought declared areas.

The policy would allow every farmer affected by the drought in the area to receive $20,000, with another $60,000 made available for loan for each farmer.

Walgett mayor Peter Waterford said he felt it was a good opportunity for especially the members from Coffs Harbour and Lismore to see what the drought situation was like out here.

"This money will really help, because we are still waiting for our exceptional circumstances application to go through and it's been taking such a long time.

"People are getting very desperate out here, and they're under a lot of pressure, which if we don't deal with it soon could lead to suicides."

Cr Waterford said he was happy to see that the Opposition was willing to commit $20,000 to farmers with the additional loan option of $60,000.

"It is good money and may help graziers to buy sheep again once it starts raining," he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Slack-Smith said he and his party colleagues had visited Moree, Brewarrina and Collarenebri as well as Walgett earlier this week during their tour.

He said their policy was based on money that was already available each year, worth in excess of $200 million.

Mr Slack-Smith said they met with both the mayor and council's general manager, as well as with the rural counsellor to get an idea about what the drought situation was like throughout the Shire.
