Display encourages harmony of cultures

24 Mar, 2005 08:43 AM
Harmony Day was celebrated on Monday with 26 countries represented, showing the cultural diversity that makes Lightning Ridge unique.

The exhibition was put together by the Lightning Ridge Transcultural Community Council (TCC) and held at the Arts and Crafts Centre.

Christina Johansson from the TCC said the exhibition took a lot of hard work during the past week, but the end result was worthwhile.

"We have had a few people already come through and say we must do this again next year," she said.

Gyorgyi Nyers from the TCC said it was great to see all the exhibits together showcasing a range of different cultural items.

The displays included vast ranges of paintings, books, toys and dolls, cups and mugs, clothing, flags, and a comprehensive array of different newspapers.

Quoting the Department of Immigration, Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, Ms Nyers said Harmony Day was about taking responsibility for community relations, looking after one another and making a difference.

"Our community in Lightning Ridge is a very good example of people from different cultural backgrounds living together in harmony."

"We have people from throughout the world, of more than 50 different ethnic backgrounds," she said.

Harmony Day each year provide us with the opportunity to get to know each other better by promoting the community's success as a multicultural society, recommitting ourselves to respect, goodwill and understanding between all Australians of all backgrounds, and saying no to racism.

Harmony Day occurs on March 21 every year and coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
