Deputy PM to open visitors centre

23 Jul, 2003 05:32 PM
More than 5300 visitors have utilised the services of the Lightning Ridge Visitor Information Centre and in recognition of the valuable contribution it makes to tourism, deputy prime minister and federal Gwydir MP John Anderson will officially open the centre today.

A special invitation goes out to all Tourist Association and community members who are welcome to attend this significant event, which will start at 11.30am in Lions Park.

Mr Anderson will arrive at 12pm and at 12.10pm Aunty Rose Fernando and Aunty June Barker will give a welcome to country.

Mayor Peter Waterford will give his welcome at 12.15pm and Mr Anderson will give his official opening speech at 12.25pm.

The Lightning Ridge Visitor Information Centre will be declared open at 12.35pm with the unveiling of the plaque by the chairperson, mayor and Mr Anderson.

Today marks the centre's fourth month of operation.

As well as officially opening the Visitor Information Centre, Mr Anderson will be presenting the Lightning Ridge, Collarenebri and Rowena Centenary Medal winners with their medallions at 12.40pm.

He will leave the centre at 1pm.

The Lightning Ridge Visitor Information Centre is an excellent example of a working partnership between Walgett Shire Council, the Lightning Ridge Tourist Association, small business and volunteers.

Lightning Ridge Visitor Information Centre co-ordinator Rebel Black said each participant in the partnership was vital.

"There are more than 85 volunteer hours each week put into the centre at all levels (management and front of house) which represents a financial contribution and inevitable saving of more than $1500 per week," she said.

"This is a significant contribution by the local community to the tourism industry of the Walgett shire - that is more than $78,000 a year the community does not have to actually spend on wages and promotion for tourism development."

"I believe this project has financial, industry and community value; not only does it offer an excellent tourism service but it provides an opportunity for volunteers in the community to contribute while also learning new skills."

The centre is open seven days a week between 9am and 5pm and offers visitors comprehensive tourism and directional information.

Locally and regionally produced gifts are also for sale at the centre.
