Plans for Saturday's Reconciliation Week celebration day in the Ridge have been finalised.
The family day expo aimed at bridging the gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people throughout the shire will focus on bringing service providers, organisations and local ethnic groups together to share each other's culture and gain a greater understanding of not only Aboriginal customs but also multicultural backgrounds.
Walgett shire Reconciliation Group chair Joan Treweeke said this year's event was set to follow last year's dinner dance held at Walgett.
"We wanted to create a day of celebration for the Ridge where everyone could become involved in the activities.
"Due to our high levels of support from the community we will be able to present a day that has been derived from co-operation between the various people who are giving up their time and skills.
This year's Reconciliation Week, which began on Tuesday and will run to next Tuesday, carries the theme, "Together We're Doing It", and Mrs Treweeke said that was what the day was hoping to illustrate and incorporate.
"There will be activities for the whole family, the childcare centre will run activities for the children and there will be dance movements and games provided by the Department of Sport and Recreation."
The Saturday event will start at 10am with group displays and go through to 5pm.
Aboriginal elder George Rose will give a welcome to country and at 2pm Mayor Peter Waterford will present two special awards.
