Karen Roberts was pleasantly surprised this week to learn that she was the 4000th person to attend the Lightning Ridge Safety Awareness Course.
For this she received a plaque to commemorate the occasion.
The Department of Mineral Resources has been delivering the Safety Awareness Course since 1993 and celebrated the 150th course this week.
Bruce Kremmer, who was instrumental in developing the course in conjunction with other departmental officers and the LRMA has presented 149 courses - he has only missed one in 11 years.
As well as being held in Lightning Ridge and the Grawin the department has also delivered the course in White Cliffs and Coober Pedy.
It has been a long term aim of the department and the LRMA to raise safety awareness and improve standards through education and to date it appears to have been very successful as we have not had a fatality since the course was introduced.
The effectiveness of this course is even being recognised further abroad as David Howell, safety officer with the Department of Mineral Resources has been asked to make a presentation on the course at the NSW Minerals Council Safety Innovation Awards being held in July.
