Walgett Shire Council is planning to meet with the Lightning Ridge Central School representatives within a month to discuss maintenance arrangements for the sports oval behind the Lightning Ridge District Bowling Club.
Prior to the start of this financial year, the bowling club staff had worked on maintaining the fields.
However, at the last council meeting councillor Bob Hewlett asked if the Department for Education could pay for part of its maintenance, because it was understood there was a prior verbal arrangement between the council, school and department when the school was initially expanded, close to a decade ago.
Mr Hewlett had said that because there was not enough room at the school to develop ovals the town's ovals would be used by the school.
Walgett Shire Council's general manager Vic North said the council wanted to meet to find out exactly what the initial agreement was, and who would pay what share of the costs for maintenance.
"It sounds like some things were agreed upon but haven't been done.
"We're hoping to share the facility though, because one oval is enough for the community to share."
He said council also needed to discuss with the school the lock-up arrangements of the storage shed.
"It is not our intention to take the oval away from the community, but if we can find a way of reducing the ratepayers' money through funding from the department we will try," he said.
However, Mr North said the maintenance costs of the oval had been budgeted for, and it was not an issues of lack of funds.
