Walgett Shire Council has deferred its decision on whether fluoride would be added to town water supplies until council meets again in March.
The decision came after a 33-page petition against the addition of fluoride from Lightning Ridge residents was presented to the council.
Walgett Shire Council engineer Alan Nelson recommended that council pursue the fluoridation of town water in Walgett and Collarenebri but defer its decision on Lightning Ridge until there is evidence suggesting the town is seeking it.
At this point the only responses received from Lightning Ridge have been against the addition of fluoride.
Administrator Hugh Percy said that while he had personally had a positive experience with the addition of fluoride to town water he was not going to force on the shire if it was not wanted.
There is a public forum on the issue on Thursday March 3 at the Walgett Sporting Club Auditorium at 5pm.
