Council administrator calls for shire to change its name

28 Apr, 2005 09:00 AM
Walgett Shire Council administrator Hugh Percy has called on shire residents to have a say on the renaming of the shire.

"The council will make a decision on the naming of the shire," he said.

Mr Percy believes Walgett Shire Council had an unwanted reputation after the sacking of council last year.

"This will be a fresh start for the future ... to coin a phrase, we will rise from the ashes," he said.

Mr Percy said in his report to the council meeting, "when the shire merges from administration it could be reinvigorated by fresh faces, new enthusiasm and this new energy would certainly be enhanced with a new name."

Mr Percy said the Walgett shire was not about Walgett, with other urban areas and places which do not have to come under the umbrella of the Walgett name.

A consultation period will be conducted by the shire to gauge the community's feeling on the subject and all the feedback from the consultation will be passed onto the Department of Local Government and onto the minister.

"Let's get it out in the public domain ... when the process is finished the information will be placed before the minister, and he may call for a referendum," he said.

In his recommendation, Mr Percy also called for members of the community in favour of renaming the shire to nominate suitable and appropriate names.

He proposed the consultation process conclude at the end of June this year.
