Community input for council's plans

20 Jun, 2002 08:27 AM
Walgett Shire Council held a public meeting on Tuesday in Lightning Ridge for community members to have input into council's strategic management plan and tourism strategic plan for the next financial year and upcoming five years.

Council's general manager, Vic North, said the strategic management plan included council's directions and priorities for the next five years.

"It encompasses the challenge people face in the community, and includes the vision of the shire for five years.

"It's all about what we want the shire to be and look like," he said.

Mr North said the plan gave an overview of councillors, and what the main outcome was they were looking for.

"It outlines what is going to be happening in the next 12 months, and how that fits into a five year plan, including outcomes, measures and targets."

Mr North said it also included a document with proposed new fees and charges.

"The plan has budget estimates for the year, so the public can have their say before the budget is adopted on the 27th of June.

"We will be considering submissions for the next year, where council makes changes necessary and then adopts the plan."

Mr North said the public meeting was held so that people could listen or ask questions on anything covered by the plan.

"It was a follow-up opportunity, where the community could have their say and work with constituent groups."

Mr North said the tourism strategic plan was also on public display.

He said this plan was developed by council's tourism steering committee.

Mr North said while there were never enough dollars for council to be able to do everything within the shire, the plan proposed to look for partnerships with groups such as the Lightning Ridge Tourist Association in an effort to work together in achieving outcomes.

He said council hoped to take a facilitating role in this.

"We're looking at new initiatives, first we're helping develop brochures and maps, and then we can work on things that are relatively easy to set up, such as fishing spots and bird watching areas."

Mr North said the tourism plan also included a five-year view of incorporating Aboriginal cultural sites.

"This year's focus is on setting up tourist offices within the shire," he said.

Mr North said there was also a view to develop tour rides.

"We could have pioneer tours, maybe look at setting up historical or farming tours, it's all about using the existing resources we have and expanding them.

"It's about partnerships across the region and encouraging visitors to stay in the shire longer."

Mr North said the aim was to have Walgett Shire recognised as a tourist destination.

"City people might like to see living animals in the wild, this will be an eye opener for visitors," Mr North said.
