Clothesline perfect place for tomatoes

02 Sep, 2010 11:05 AM
We knew Lightning Ridge’s resident potter Graeme Anderson was good with his hands but we didn’t know that he had green thumbs as well.

In late autumn Mr Anderson discovered a tomato plant growing in his garden where he had previously dug in some kitchen scraps.

When the frosts started to burn the top of the plant in July, Mr Anderson pulled the whole thing up, hung it upside down on his clothesline and wrapped it up in a couple of old curtains to protect it from the frost.

Mr Anderson said there would have been about four kilograms of green tomatoes on it at that stage, but before he could track down any recipes that call for green tomatoes, the fruit began to ripen.

All these weeks later, the bush is still hanging there, laden with ripe fruit, even though Mr Anderson hasn’t done a thing in the way of providing any sustenance to it.

And apparently, the tomatoes taste great.
