 Clean sweep for juniors

Clean sweep for juniors

18 Aug, 2005 09:41 AM
The Lightning Ridge Tigers Junior Rugby League club has capped off a tremendously successful season by taking titles in all grades in the Balonne/Barwon competition.

They produced a clean sweep last Saturday when they journeyed to Mungindi for grand final day.

The Trevor McGovern/Dave Smith-coached under 8 'cubs' finished on top of the ladder, only tasting defeat three times all season.

This team has been the benchmark of the competition all year and deserves all the accolades they receive.

On Saturday they played out a hard-fought draw with Dirranbandi, and then put on a show with a comfortable victory in the season finale against St George.

Top stuff cubs and congratulations on a magnificent season.

Our under 10 Gold side put two good wins on the board against St George (white) 30-4 and Mungindi 48-12.

This side, coached by George McCormick, managed to win the highly-prized Balonne/Barwon Under 10 Shield, tallying 78 points on the day.

The side finally got a win against the previously undefeated St George (white) team.

Our boys muscled up and thoroughly deserved their title.

Well done under 10 gold.

Tony Huskinson's under 10 Black had a runaway win over Mungindi first up but could not hold out Dirranbandi in their next game.

With some calls going against our lads, our side was beaten 28-14 in a seesawing game.

Both our under 10 sides have played tremendous footy all season and deserve praise for their efforts, congratulations under 10 sides.

With our lower grades claiming season victories, the pressure was on for the Danny Drew coached under 12 Tigers outfit to follow the trend in their grand final showdown against St George.

In a thriller of a game our Tigers played hard and came away with a memorable 18-8 premiership victory.

With only two points the difference and 10 minutes left on the clock, big Zac Cobb crashed over the line twice in five minutes to secure the title.

Well done to a team that has shown incredible football abilities.

It has been a full-on season of footy, travelling long distances every game and training twice a week.

Our town has been rewarded in the best possible way with three titles under our belt, and the Junior Rugby League club could not wish for a more successful year.

Congratulations to all the players, coaches, committee members, parents, supporters and sponsors for supporting our all-conquering 2005 Ridge Tigers.

Our club's presentation day is on Sunday August 21 at 11am at Nobbies.

The tracksuit and football raffle will be drawn with player awards to be announced next week.

All welcome to come along and applaud Lightning Ridge's tremendous Junior Rugby League teams.
