Ceremony remembers veterans

19 Aug, 2010 01:52 PM
On behalf of the Lightning Ridge RSL Sub-Branch Paul Flynn led a ceremony at the Lions Park War Memorial yesterday morning to commemorate Vietnam Veterans’ Day and the 44th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.

Vietnam Veterans’ Day was formerly known as Long Tan Day because it is held on August 18, the day the Battle of Long Tan began in 1966. However, it is been adopted by all the men and women who served in the Vietnam War.

It was only a very small crowd which gathered to mark the occasion.

Dennis Demaine, a trustee of the Lightning Ridge RSL Sub-Branch, said it was unfortunate because heaps of people had attended the service last year.

The RSL sub-branch’s presence was certainly smaller than in 2009 as a lot of them, including the executive committee, were unable to attend due to illness.

A barbecue and refreshments were provided following the conclusion of the ceremony courtesy of the Lightning Ridge RSL Sub-Branch, in conjunction with Opal FM.
