Centre to give kids headstart at school

25 Aug, 2005 09:49 AM
The Lightning Ridge Central School has reopened the Headstart Centre, more commonly known as "the train", in an effort to get students ready for primary school.

The train is open between 9am and 11am every school day except Friday and is for kids aged 0 to 5.

"It is our first day today so I expect word to catch on and numbers to rise," co-ordinator Liz Smith said.

Ms Smith said the headstart centre had as many as 25 children on certain days when it was opened previously.

"The train has been shut for two years, with Little Diggers and the preschool the need for this place dropped off," she said.

Ms Smith said the centre is not just for the kids, even though they get a lot of enjoyment out of coming.

"We have a few mothers who come to meet in a relaxed environment, especially if you are a new mother in town you can come down and meet some other mothers while the kids play," she said.

Ms Smith runs the centre with Kieran Walford and they both get a lot of enjoyment out of interacting with the children.

"We also have bus days where I drive a bus for the mothers who don't own a car," she said.
