Central school day to tackle bullying

26 Nov, 2003 05:47 PM
Lightning Ridge Central School held an anti-bullying day last week to help kids combat bullying and its effects.

'Make a difference day' was an introduction to an anti-bullying program to be implemented in the school next year.

It was to raise awareness about what bullying is and how kids can make a difference in stopping bullying in the classroom and the playground.

Children did activities in class that helped focus on what they can do about bullying at school and how they can make their school a better place.

Teacher Janine Ellis said there were three main areas about bullying the school wanted to focus on to combat the problems.

"First of all any bullying program needs to have the full support of the whole school community; students, teachers right through the parents and the community," she said.

"The second thing I've learned is in a bullying program an effective thing to do is teach all of the students assertiveness skills, so one of the things we're focusing on today is how students can stand up for themselves in a bullying situation or any sort of situation.

"And the third thing is that we need to encourage kids as bystanders to discourage bullying, because if the people who are watching the bullying are discouraging it, then that's going to affect whether the bully bullies later on or how the victim reacts. If they're sticking up for the victim or helping the victim, then that's going to help support that victim."

The main aims of the day were to raise staff and student awareness about the issues of bullying, help build an anti-bullying school culture and establish an ethos within the school where assertiveness and standing up for yourself are practiced and encouraged.
