Cafe verandah is private property

31 Jan, 2002 09:43 AM
Firstly, some information that may concern a few people in the community who use private property.

One example is the verandah at the Ridge Cafe. People found using this verandah are in fact entering upon enclosed lands, otherwise known as ‘trespassing.’

If people are found on the premises after business hours they will be moved on as has been the procedure in the past.

If they persist, action may be taken against these people and they could end up in court.

Considerable damage has been caused to the premises in recent times.

The proprietors of the cafe welcome and encourage patrons to use their facilities during business hours but after hours please refrain from using the verandah.

During the week police executed a search warrant on a premise in Lightning Ridge after receiving information.

Stolen property and a quantity of drugs were recovered and enquiries are continuing with this incident.

Police have also received a report from a local property owner of a theft where a motorbike was stolen.

Information was in fact received from witnesses regarding this incident and police are following up those leads.

People are still continuing to drive on our roads without being licensed or the vehicles are being driven while unregistered.

A number of local people have been issued infringement notices for these offences and it becomes a very costly habit - $336 if unlicensed for the first offence, $524 for the second offence, and a total of $1284 if the vehicle is unregistered, uninsured and has tax unpaid.

Contrary to the beliefs of some of the people within our community, you do need to have a licence to drive a motor vehicle or ride a motorcycle on the roads within NSW.

I would like to advise people to make enquiries if they have any doubt at all as to whether an area or track is a public street in this State.

As a number of people have found out in recent times within the Lightning Ridge township, the area between Pandora Street and Cardinal Road is known is regarded as a public street in the eyes of the law.

I would also offer a suggestion to people in the community with motorcycles or whose children may have a motorbike, perhaps you should look at finding a dirt track where the bikes can be ridden safely and legally.

For the information of people who have heard about the bones located on a property within our area, it has been confirmed they are sheep bones.

The school holidays are drawing to a close and children will be returning to school.

With this comes travelling to and from school, which is commonly done by bicycle in Lightning Ridge.

Perhaps it is a good idea to do some fundamental checks of the bike and its equipment.

Once again, I would like to advise parents and children that wearing a helmet is required when riding a bike on the street.

If you don’t you may receive an infringement which will cost the offender or parent $45 on each occasion. Please consider the safety of your children
