Book looks at life in detention

17 Dec, 2003 06:03 PM
Lightning Ridge author Sandy Thorne has launched her book on her experiences working as an officer at Woomera and Curtin detention centres.

Titled Beyond The Razor Wire, this fascinating and shocking book has been written from her diary, and relates the bizarre, horrifying, and violent episodes that were an everyday part of detention centre life.

Riots, lip-sewing, "slash-ups", and assaults were just some of the unpleasant regular aspects of a detention officer's job.

The episodes on the months Sandy spent training in a maximum security prison are just as amazing as the rest of the book.

Until "boat people", or illegal immigrants are cleared of being criminals on the run, or have terrorist links, they are classed as maximum security. Diseases that could decimate our rural industries are also a risk they present until examined thoroughly.

The book is Sandy's stand for truth and an end to extreme political correctness.

Sandy has had eight previous books published with great success, all about outback characters (three about a Lightning Ridge family) with the accent on humour.

There is humour throughout this book too - the hilarious episodes are a welcome relief to the constant violence and high drama.
