Barbecue to say thanks for help

11 Apr, 2003 09:36 AM
Forty to 50 farmers stayed at WKL Distributors after one of the latest fodder drops to throw on a surprise barbecue for Bush Church Aid Lightning Ridge organiser Pastor Rick Maude.

The barbecue was held to thank Pastor Maude for his support in organising the more than 50 drops.

Pastor Maude who humbly accepted the token gesture said even though there has been some recent rain throughout the district the majority of graziers were still feeding their sheep.

"It's an ongoing plight.

"Some properties now have grass on them, while others haven't been able to benefit from any rain, it's all varied."

Pastor Maude said the number of graziers listed to receive hay from the fodder drops had declined.

"We now have 60 properties listed, but if no further rain occurs, there is a possibility the list will go up again."

Pastor Maude said the recent hailstorm received in the Ridge didn't reach any of the properties surrounding the town and provided no relief to the farmers.

"We need general rain, but we also have to be lucky that it will hit the right spots that need it the most."

Pastor Maude said that more donations had recently rolled in which meant the fodder drops would continue at least for the foreseeable future.

"Every time we thought we'd run out of money, more people would donate and we've been able to carry on."

Pastor Maude said he felt the barbecue was a good thing for the farmers because it allowed them to come together and re-establish bonds, talk, renew acquaintances and feel important.

He said he was touched by the friendly gesture of the barbecue and card he was given.
