Thank you to all those members and guests who attended the LRMA celebration of 30 years of incorporation last Saturday evening.
Everyone appeared to have a great time and the dancing carried on until the early hours of the morning. We were very privileged to have mineral resources minister Kerry Hickey attend our event as well as the Barwon MP Ian Slack-Smith.
Both the minister and the MP spoke during dinner as well as Mayor Peter Waterford, president Jeremy Lomax and designer miner Anthony Melonas. Kevin Phillips, president of the Queensland Opal Miners Association presented Len Cram with honorary membership of every opal miners' association in Australia for his promotion of the opal over the years.
Director Bob Barrett paid tribute on behalf of the members to Jeremy Lomax for his immeasurable contribution to the LRMA and to the black opal industry over many years and presented him with a caricature of himself by John Murray. Jeremy Lomax has been president of the LRMA for 15 of the 30 years of incorporation.
One of the highlights of the evening was a very entertaining rendition of Mining Class Man to the music of Working Class Man by Anthony Melonas, Victor Johnston and Craig Thomas.
The table centre pieces were works of art depicting a miniature mineral claim tags, possession notice, windlass and all and these were sold to the guests and over $600 was raised for the Historical Society.
The evening finished off with some very stylish dancing by the guests to the Brisbane band 'Berst'. Everyone looked like they had a great time. We got a good roll up at Nobby's for the sausage sizzle on Sunday and the cricket match between the Queenslander and LRMA ended up in a draw without a ball being bowled due to the incredibly hot weather.
The Tall Tales Tour went incredibly well and thanks to Barbara Moritz for educating all those who went on the bus tour on a bit more of our history.
