The mining community has raised concerns over the epidemic outbreak of Hudson pear on the opal fields.
A total of $240,000 will be contributed by the Walgett Shire Council, the Castlereagh Macquarie County Council (CMCC) and the Western Catchment Management Authority (CMA) in an effort to control the outbreak of Hudson pear.
The Walgett Shire is contributing $40,000 with the CMCC also putting in $40,000 and the Western CMA matching the amount 2 to 1.
According to the Lightning Ridge Miners Association (LRMA), the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources will convene a meeting in an effort to get some co-ordination in controlling the noxious weed.
Patrick Fletcher lives at Glengarry and said the Hudson pear outbreak was in urgent need of attention.
"You ask anyone what is the most pressing issue at the moment and they will say the Hudson pear problem," he said.
Mr Fletcher said parts of Opal Prospecting Blocks 125, 126 and the eastern half of 123 were heavily infested.
"The Hudson pear is sterilising a lot of country, before we even start to open up new areas we need to realise a lot of those areas are already sterilised," he said.
Mr Fletcher said compared to 12 months ago the weed had spread uncontrollably leaving some areas unusable.
The LRMA said it was working with the Work for the Dole Program through Joblink to have the weed sprayed.
Maxine O'Brien from the LRMA said there was not just one species of the weed, but seven: "We currently have all these bodies committing to the cause we just need to meet to have some co-ordination, that is the next step," she said.
