Last Thursday night saw the hosting of the inaugural Walgett Shire Business Awards, designed to recognize the emerging quality of the area's businesses. Around 50 people gathered in a tranquil setting at Lightning Ridge's Dig In restaurant. There were three categories: Outstanding Customer Service, Business Presentation and Business Innovation, plus an award for the Most Outstanding Business. Dig In took out Outstanding Customer Service and the quality of their business was on display for all to see on the night. John Murray Art Gallery was awarded Outstanding Business Presentation for its fine display of artwork. The Sheepyard Inn won Outstanding Business Innovation for their unique establishment, nestled amongst the opal fields. Walgett Newsagency took out the Most Outstanding Business and were awarded a return airfare from Dubbo to Sydney, donated by Qantaslink and an accommodation voucher sponsored by Accor Advantage Plus. "The Outstanding Business winner from each town will compete for the Orana Area Consultative Committee Regional Business Excellence Award to be announced and awarded at the Dubbo Rhino Business Awards on October 28," Orana ACC project officer Lorraine Holland said. The Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service was also given a special award for its dedication to the Walgett Shire over a number of years. Walgett Shire tourism development officer Alana Douglas said the judges were very impressed with the quality of entries. "There were 15 local businesses who entered across the three different categories," she said. Ms Douglas said having the inaugural awards was a very exciting occasion: "I'm sure next year is going to be bigger and better once again." Robert Wilcox from Orana Area Consultative Committee said it was good to see entries from all over the shire. Businesses from Cryon, Lightning Ridge, Walgett and Sheepyards put themselves through the judging process.
