The non-professional awards is perhaps the most popular category, and is for those who have not had a formal apprenticeship training, do not derive a taxable income from their jewellery work and are not retired
professional jewellers.
Entrants can design any piece of jewellery they wish so long as it
conforms to the entry conditions and all pieces are their own work.
The opal must be freeform and/or undulating surface, can be
modern, conventional or futuristic and must be practical and able to be worn.
The entrant must sign the
declaration on the official entry form and declare that the work is their own in front of a Justice of the Peace.
The overall winner will receive a trophy and certificate, the highly
recommended a certificate and three finalists will all receive a certificate each.
The Apprentice Award is for
persons who are indentured to a
qualified jeweller. Entrants can design any piece of jewellery they wish so long as it is practical and able to be worn.
Opal must be freeform and/or undulating surface and can be
modern or conventional, futuristic or unique in its design.
Apprentices must provide proof of their apprenticeship, either a
photocopy of the indenture or a record of their apprentice number.
The overall winner will receive a trophy, certificate and $500, the highly commended a certificate and the three finalists a certificate each.

DID YOU KNOW... OPALS, ASTROLOGY AND WITCHCRAFT.
The opal is the traditional
birthstone of those born in October.
The astrological manual depicts them as being curious gemstones in that they are both projective and receptive, represent all of the
elements and planets and can be charged or programmed with the energy and intent of the wearer.
They give the appearance of living stones that seem to shimmer with the same mysterious forces that make the month of October so special. They are associated with invisibility, astral projection, psychism, past life regression, beauty and love.
Black opals are prized by witches and magicians as power stones.
October is the eighth month of the Roman calendar, the tenth month of our calendar and the last month of the witches year.
The astrological signs of Libra and Scorpio share October and the month is sacred to the witch goddess in her dark aspect as the “Crone”.
Opal is also the 14th anniversary of marriage and legend has it that a spell may be cast in October by tying two opals at either end of a piece of pink ribbon and every evening drawing it closer together for seven days until they are all touching.
Bind them together with the ribbon, which represents destiny, and leave for another seven days.
By this time a new love will have entered your life or an old one drawn closer.
This spell should only be cast by people who have the opal as their birthstone.
