Volunteers with the Lightning Ridge State Emergency Service (SES) Unit say that the SES is the first place people seeking adventure, community involvement, new skills and fun should look to.
Leontein Valk-Abel, who has been with the local SES unit for 10 years, said she was getting nationally recognised training in things she never thought she’d have the chance to do.
“Our unit trains people in rescue, first aid, working with the media, operating flood boats and chainsaws, map reading, radio communications – you name it. And it’s great to know I’m helping the community at the same time as I’m learning new skills and meeting new people.”
The Lightning Ridge SES Unit will be holding an information day on Saturday June 26 at 2pm at their headquarters on Pandora Street.
People who are interested in finding out more about being a part of the SES will have a chance to ask questions, tour the headquarters and see first-hand what the unit does to help the community in emergencies.
Unit controller David Lane said he was always looking for people who were enthusiastic and reliable.
“No matter what your background or skill levels are we can find a way for you to help and we can teach you what you need to know,’’ he said.
If anybody would like to know more about the information day, please phone the Lightning Ridge SES Unit on 0427 291 574.
