Lightning Ridge Central School opened its gates to 380 students going into year one to year 12, with new enrolments each day, however many students haven’t returned from holiday venues due to the floodwater.
Another worry is there are a few students who live out in the Grawin area and will not be able to get to school. Dr Tome is particularly worried about a couple of year 12 students, but will liaise with parents to get work out to them.
The kindergarten children will start today, as the school participates in Best Start.
The 23 little ones will come together for their first classes today.
The kindergarten teachers, Lauren Birney and Sue Heyne, have been evaluating each child’s skills so those wearing the LRCS uniform for the first time are taught with programs to meet their specific needs, rather than being taught to a middle group ability.
The results from previous years have shown that Best Start is a success.
The parents will receive a report at the end of term one that will continue throughout the school year.
School principal Dr Chris Tome said he was really pleased with last year’s HSC results and in particular Carolina Gregory who was named on the HSC honours list with her excellent results in hospitality
Dr Tome said the school welcomed new teachers Julee Hunt who has taken the position of head teacher, English and history classes. Julee has come to the Ridge from Collarenebri.
Maricar Mittasch has received a position in stage three, Maricar was a relief teacher last year. Jon Coughlin has a position in the high school as a maths, science teacher. Hannah Verry is happy to have a permanent position with stage 1/2 class. Hannah was with LRCS relieving in 2010-11.
And a very warm welcome to Penny Lehman taking the position of deputy principal secondary and also a welcome back to Adele Forbes who has been on maternity leave.
LRSC is losing Chris Riesing. After teaching for many years at the Ridge Chris has received a transfer to Kyogle High School.
