RSL forced to close

22 Dec, 2011 10:31 AM
In what is a sad day for the town the Lightning Ridge RSL has been forced to close its doors.

The financial burden had become too large and with the club not having the ability to generate income to pay ongoing costs there was no choice but to close it

down.

It is an emotional time for many members with the club having passed through its darkest days in the past few months.

Recently the club’s costs have been subsidised by other sub branches and head office however it has now been put on the market for sale so outstanding debts can be paid.

Eric Bell had been sent to the Ridge by the State Council of the NSW RSL to change the locks on the doors, disconnect all utilities and seize all assets.

Anything of value is going to the Narrabri RSL and the District Council of the RSL.

Allen Giddings, a member of the Lightning Ridge RSL, said “it is a disappointment that the club is closing down’’.

Dave Hutchinson, a member of the Walgett RSL Sub Branch said, “it is a very sad day for the RSL in this town”.

Andy Bostock, the club treasurer said, “the state branch is adhering to the law, the club has lost all moral ability and the spirit of the law under which the RSL was first established, the club lost its ability to earn an income”.

At the end of Tuesday, when most of the packing up had been finalised, the State Branch of the RSL and the Lightning Ridge Sub Branch agreed to donate the tables and chairs from the back garden to the Lightning Ridge Youth Centre.

Allan Cobb chairman of the Lightning Ridge Community Working Party said, “at least some good has come out of today, this equipment will be welcomed at the youth centre”.
