Lightning Ridge community radio, Opal FM, is well on the way to winning $10,000 courtesy of the Community Heart Awards run by That’s Life magazine.
From amongst 1000 entries across Australia our community radio team is one of 20 groups that are in contention for the major prize.
By reaching the final stage in the elimination process the station has been awarded $1000.
Opal FM’s angle of entry was based on the grounds that they are run by volunteers who aim to keep the local community informed and entertained.
They also noted that they supplement the station’s running cost with a weekly barbecue and also help other charities with fundraising if they are short of help.
Winning the $10,000 prize money would mean the station could buy a new computer, which would provide its listeners with a better service.
The winner will be decided by nation wide voting with
guidelines for the poll announced in the current edition of the magazine and their website.
“The more votes we get the better the chance of the big prize,” said Ann Brown, volunteer of Opal FM.
The team from Lightning Ridge’s community radio is encouraging all members of the town to get out there and help them win the competition.
Votes close on June 19 and the winner will be announced on July 8.
