The Walgett Shire Council relinquished its management of the Lightning Ridge Caravan Park last week, as reserve trust manager, after the Lands and Property Management Authority (LPMA) requested they take control of the site to undertake their own administration.
The meeting to discuss the change in management of the caravan park took place on last Thursday, where it was decided that the LPMA would initiate the take over earlier than previously expected.
Previously council had leased the site to a private operator for the last 10 years and following its
expiration the management fell back into their hands in October 2009 and it was agreed that they would hold onto it until the LPMA had the capacity to handle it themselves.
“The LPMA will manage the park in the immediate future and will liaise with council in its capacity as the local government and planning authority,”a LPMA spokesperson said.
Scott Taylor has been appointed as an administrator on the project and he is working closely with the LPMA as they explore the feasibility of redeveloping the park into a tourist caravan park site.
Director of Corporate and Community Services Carole Medcalf reported that eviction and demolition notices are still valid regardless of who is managing the park.
“LPMA are aware of all outstanding notices and has been indicated will be pursuing them as a matter of course,” Ms Medcalf noted.
In regard to this query the LPMA stated that residential agreements would be honoured.
“The matter of notices, which have (been) issued by the Walgett Shire Council will remain a matter between council and the respective park residents,” a spokesperson said.
At the current time the LPMA has no approximate timeframe set for the works they wish to carry out and a list of allocated funds for the project is yet to be determined.
The LPMA considers that there is significant potential for the redevelopment of the caravan park and they believe that a redeveloped tourist caravan park at this site would be an asset to the Lightning Ridge community.
